Beltane ( MayEve-May 1st)

The first day of Summer in the Celtic calender of the seasonal year. At this time of year sources of water were especially revered as coming from the womb of Mother Earth and bringing the fertility to plants, animals and people that was essential for their suvival. The Goddess was at her most fertile and decked in Greenery and blossoms.

MayDay Spring water was ritually sprinkled on barren land and women to make them fertile again and dew of May morning ,before the suns rays hit, was believed to be the most magical of all to wash in and drink.

Many sacred wells and springs were held in great reverence and were decorated with May blossom, flowers and ribbons. The warrior Celts often sacraficedtheir most precious objects, including swords, by dropping them into wells and pools, which can be seen as a precurser to the romantic Arthurian legends of Excalibur and the Lady of the Lake.
